This is very interesting. I have read a number of articles on Generation Y and the changes it will make to the business environment. Schools have been removing competition for years and I guess it all started with non-competitive sports days! Everyone's a winner! However if you read Malcolm Gladwell's latest book 'Outliers' he gives an excellent explanation of why some Children fall behind in Math when they are more than capable of excelling within the subject. The pressure of competition can be crippling to weaker personalities even if they have higher potential than the ego's that they sit next to.

The question is whether we want business's run by the strongest personalities or the best equipped leaders. That decision lies with the owners or shareholders whose primary interest is short term financial return so the strong personalities will tend to win. Jim Collins findings in 'Good to Great' around level 5 leaders also makes very interesting reading. He found that the most successful business' in his study group had non-egotistical leaders. I think that passion is the key ingredient. No new business has accomplished more than google in our lifetimes and the founders had a passion to offer a better search engine. Their ambition was not to be rich, but to achieve something for themselves. Finding employees who love what they do is a great recipe for success and it would be interesting to see statistics on how competitive these people are?

The lack of individuality diplayed by those who's only motivation in life is to compete is so tiresome. Have a think about what you set out to gain by going into business. Freedom, quality of life, adventure to name but a few. In these goals you are a winner. Spare a moment to remember your fisherman; leave the Smeatonian principles of competitiveness to those friendless indivduals who aspire to nothing more than an early grave.
